What it may have looked like some long forgotten autumn evening 800 years ago.
(Note: I carefully placed glow sticks in the windows so as to not disturb the ruin. No fire was used for the effect.)

I like this galaxy very much. However, I don't know if I like it because of its "grand design" or because it reminds me of The Time Tunnel. Yes, that ancient TV show in which Tony and Douglas were inevitably lost in time. (Never understood how the guys in charge could retrieve a massive mammut from the past, but not the pair of time travelers together). Anyway, this is M51, The Time Tunnel.

The Rice Hat Nebula on the left is a verrrrry faint supernova remnant. It was hard to pull out even with my fast (f/3.3) scope in the Bortle 1'ish skies of SW New Mexico and over 34 hours of exposure time. But...here it is. #astrophotography #photography
Can't even put into words how excited I am right now.
It's frickin' cold but I'm out for the second night out with clear skies this week.. Imaging #pleiades tonight.
Polar alignment was a bit tricky at first, but worked well in the end.
Getting the small kit zoom lens of my camera to somewhat decent focus was more of a fight.
Taking 30 second subs now, till the battery dies 😅
This is the famous Horsehead and Flame nebulas. My HaRGB version of this region is one of my favorite images I have made, so I wanted to give it another go with a different color palette. This time I went with more of a SHO look and I quite like it!

The Horsehead Nebula (also known as Barnard 33 or B33) is a small dark nebula in the constellation Orion.[2] The nebula is located just to the south of Alnitak, the easternmost star of Orion's Belt, and is part of the much larger Orion molecular cloud complex.
Like how you can see the two ghosts on the left too!

OMG, it is possible that I have solved my year long issues with the mount not wanting to guide. My mount has an RJ11 "telephone" cable between the pilot and the head, and today it dawned on me that I can just test it with my cable tester that I got two months ago.
And yes, sometimes one of the six strands is failing, and probably when the temps are freezing, the connection is even worse.
I made a new cable, now I need to a clear night to confirm if that was the problem.
New blog post!
In which I talk about how I am getting back to astrophotography, show a new picture I took just a few days ago, and also vent my growing frustrations about hardware issues when taking pictures of the night sky.
Update from last night:
I still cannot force my setup to guide at all.
I decided to postpone fighting with it, and just do some exposures unguided, only tracked.
Got two hours of the Witch Head Nebula, and it barely registered above the noise, did not expect it is that dark.
My new lens is quite sharp wide open, but still I think I will step it down a bit.
Will continue research why I cannot guide.

When you see ice building up on your dew heater, it means two things:
- it is very cold
- and you forgot to turn it on
Goodnight.
We’re back in Buccleuch, Johannesburg, for another night of stargazing! Tonight, we spot constellations like Orion, Vela, Carina (Carina Nebula), and stars like Canopus, Rigel, and Procyon.

This is our closest galactic neighbor and, if our course calculations are correct, our galaxies will collide with it. It's so large and bright, it can be seen with the naked eye under sufficiently dark skies just not in this detail. It will more likely appear as a bright smudge in the sky.
This is also an #astrophotography from last year.
Here's tonight's ~80 percent waxing gibbous Moon. It's 378,481km (235,177mi) distant from the Earth. After quite a few days of snow and rain we had a super clear night tonight, so I took advantage of it. And I would have forgotten to do so if not for @catherineryanhyde, posting her shot of the Moon a little earlier, thanks!

Went out to dinner yesterday and knew that there's gonna be a great nightsky later on, so I decided to bring my camera and tripod with me.
Eventually photobombed Orion the hunter while gazing at the stars :D
Didn't stay too long as it was quite cold and I wasn't alone, so no deep-sky action, but it's still great looking up and feeling like being part of the universe.
Nightsky is like magic...

The trouble with ambitious #photography projects is they can become a bit like a curse. This is an image I’ve tried to capture 4 times across 3 years, and this – the second version – is still the best.
#astrophotography in some of the darkest skies on earth under #tasmania ‘s imposing Russell Falls in heavy flow was a hard thing to pull off. The window this shot works is only about an hour a night for a few weeks a year, and it’s rarely not cloudy.
G’day there! I’m Ben, and this is my about… 19th social media #introduction post? I’m a #photography and #science nerd, and the victim of perennial curiosity.
I’m an #actuallyautistic #disabledartist, living in lutruwita/Tasmania, #australia, in my mid 30s. I specialise in #landscapephotography, #astrophotography, and #timelapse in the island’s wild places.
I like to play with light. These are some of my more successful experiments.
How are we all? Say hello!
This one might be my crown jewel :')
Making this image took so much planning, and just as much execution.

Back online after a well needed tech break 😊
How did everyone celebrate the new years?
Here’s mine, from the first night of the year… absolutely stoked after 4 years of chasing, the stars finally aligned! 💫
Now I can rest easy if I miss any future auroras this year 😆 You saw it here first ✨😉
