Blog post on Maps and the upcoming GNOME 48 release
It's time for the traditional yearly wrap-up blog post!

🎄🎅🗺️
Finally finished implementing the classic 15 puzzle game but using the standard #OpenStreetMap tiles as the sliding pieces! 🗺️🧩
While there are many implementations of this game (some even let you upload your own image), as far as I know, not one directly uses OSM slippy map tiles for the pieces. I figured this would be a nifty side coding project and it was fun to do! 💪
Currently you can play any of 20 map locations. Enjoy! 🎉
New blog post about the upcoming #GNOME Maps 47.0
Hi, This is my first post on Mastodon 👋 My name is Fabian, I studied architecture and I'm creating critical cartography in my free time. I look forward to exchanging ideas and maps in this exciting community.
I am mainly interested in climate related mapping and combining open source data with old maps and different shading and printing techniques. 🗺️ See you around!
(Norhern Hemisphere) Summer Maps Blog Post: https://ml4711.blogspot.com/2024/07/summer-maps.html
Alright #Mapstodon #OpenStreetMap There's still / again broad scale vandalism going on in our beloved map 😓
So let's clarify a couple of things! 🤓
There are practically zero checks for what goes into the OpenStreetMap database. You can create an account and delete a city. It'll be in the database immediately. The thinking is that the community will spot it and fix it ("self-healing map") and there are tools to check for vandalism in the map.

I think the number of reference issues here is some kind of record for me…

#GNOME Maps git main now uses the vector renderer by default! 🥳
The venerable #OpenStreetMap Mapnik raster tiles has served us well, but the time has now come to step up to give the new vector style and implementation some more testing before being official in #GNOME 47 in September!

The map style has been merged into #GNOME Maps! 🎉
Blog post for those curious about why I made a brand new style, and what it takes to make a map look this awesome! https://www.jwestman.net/2024/02/10/new-look-for-gnome-maps.html

It's finally all starting to come together! #mapstodon #GNOME
I've made some updates to #MastodonNearMe - and as always I'd love to hear about language- or location-focussed servers for the map.
It's time for the end-of-year blog post

Huge update to the map style: I've started to add icons! I'm using the GNOME symbolic icon set and I think they fit very well. Not nearly everything is included yet--turns out there's a *lot* of different kinds of places--but I have all the code in place to load icons and configure colors/sizes/etc.
Also since the last update, @mlundblad added ferry lines and gondolas!
Check it out at https://maps.jwestman.net and let me know what you think.
I genuinely feel like #Protomaps is not nearly getting the attention it deserves
We can drop a single file on a static host and get stylable vector maps? Magic ✨
In combination with Maplibre it's a game changer for 99% of web map use cases 👏
In 2019 I was hunting for a new apartment and wanted to figure out which neighborhoods had quick commutes to my workplace. Fast forward to 2022: I gave a talk on the topic at Iffy Books!
