Can you imagine this image on a very large metal or acrylic print? The colors turned out beautiful.

Just before Christmas, our annual trip to Bosque del Apache, NM. At dawn thousands of snow geese having just settled in across the water, all at once took to the air again, flying directly overy our heads. A matter of seconds it was over.

Full moon and Jupiter rising over conifers. (Jupiter is not in the first photo.)

Infrared filter used to darken the sky, which also makes the conifers look almost snow-covered.

First photo shows the full moon rising through partially sunlit trees.

Second photo was taken a couple minutes later and shows Jupiter has also just risen above the trees on the far right of the frame.

Third photo is a zoom/crop of the right side of the second photo to better show Jupiter. I boosted the brightness of Jupiter a bit to make it more visible.

Full moon rising through partially sunlit conifers. Infrared helps darken the sky to make the moon stand out with more contrast. Infrared also makes the conifers look almost snow covered.

The sun was only 1 or 2 degrees above the horizon, so only the tops of most trees were sunlit. The rest of the trees are in shadow.

The Apache Point Observatory is an astronomical observatory located in Sunspot, New Mexico, approximately 18 miles south of Cloudcroft. There are several telescopes gathering data for a variety of stakeholders, including the Sloane Digital Sky Survey.

Comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS) on 20 Oct, as seen from the Sacramento mountains of southern New Mexico. (Elevation 9,000 feet.)

The moon is out of the sky and the comet is a naked eye object in a fairly dark sky with the tail extending about 10 degrees.

The surface brightness of the tail is similar to that of the milky way that lies 30 degrees to the left. (Not shown in tonight's photos)

1st image is a telephoto shot and a stack of 25 images.

2nd image is a wide angle view in bright twilight, single exposure.

3rd image is a wide angle view in darker twilight and a stack of 20 images.

Telephoto view of the comet. The anti-tail is still visible but not as prominent as a week ago. I do not see any signs of a blue ion/gas tail. Because the moon is out of the evening sky the camera captures far more stars, making the sky a rich and colorful backdrop.

Put a red circle around 12 Oct on your calendar. That evening this comet will show up in the evening sky after sunset. If it doesn't break apart and melt, it may be an easy naked eye object in evening twilight.
