Children’s footprints were eerily visible in the snow dusting that path.

“Yuki-san said to follow the children to water. This is what she must have meant,” I said, pointing at the prints.

Only I didn’t tell him the next day or the day after. Instead, I lay prostrate with a high fever, ghost sick, on the futon.
